Alex Chalmers

Alex Chalmers is the Founder and Managing Partner of MCP and is responsible for deal sourcing and structuring, legal and operational due diligence, dispositions, and overall firm strategy and operations.
Previously he was a co-founder of Avenida Capital, a New York real estate investment and development platform and raised and managed over $250 million from US public and corporate pension plans, global foundations, European Fund of Funds and family offices in Asia, South America and Canada. Avenida Capital developed 25 projects across two discretionary funds focused on emerging markets spanning over 3,000 multi-family units, over 2 million square feet of retail and over 400,000 square feet of commercial space. Avenida Capital was acquired by London-based global asset manager Ashmore Group in 2017 (LSE: ASHM).
Prior to Avenida, he was a Principal in the Private Funds Group at Jefferies (NYSE: JEF) where he worked with institutional fund managers to structure equity transactions across the real estate, private credit and technology sectors and held Series 7 and 63 licenses.
He is the founder of Bright Light Systems, a venture-backed industrial lighting and software controls company for which he received patents in the field of high mast lighting. BLS was acquired by private equity firm JMC and Phoenix Lighting in 2017. He founded Material Ventures, an affiliate of Material Capital Partners, to focus on themes within real assets, sustainability and technology that impact the built environment. He started his career as a software programmer at the Oracle Corporation.
Alex holds a Professional Certificate from MIT in Real Estate Development, an MBA from the University of Michigan and a BA from the University of Southern California. He sits on the Urban Land Institute Carolinas Council, is a member of YPO Charleston and sits on several non-profit boards.
